IS fires five rockets at Kabul airport; US claims its missile defence system intercepted three

Kabul: at least ten people were killed in the drone strikes carried out by the United States military near the Kabul airport targeting the IS-Khorasan suicide bombers on Sunday. The dead include five civilians. Within 24 hours of the strikes on Monday morning, the IS fired five rockets at the Kabul airport, although the United States claims these were intercepted successfully by the air defence system at the airport. Meanwhile, the rescue operations have stopped, and the Taliban militants have begun to take control of the airport vicinity.

On Sunday, the United States claimed to have foiled a major plot targeting the airport by killing at least two suicide bombers with the drone strikes. However, on Monday, a rocket attack aimed at Kabul airport was carried out through a car parked in the Salim Karwan neighbourhood. The C-RAM system, the US had installed for securing the Kabul airport in the past, successfully intercepted three of the rocket attacks. Even so, one rocket hit a building near the airport, while another is believed to have struck a vehicle. An investigation is underway to determine if there were any casualties in the attack. Also, the IS-Khorasan or the IS-K has accepted responsibility for the attacks.

One US army unit is deployed at Kabul airport but will be pulling back in a few hours. After that, either the Taliban or Turkey or Qatar is expected to take over the responsibility of Kabul airport. Turkey and the Taliban are said to have discussed the matter. Nevertheless, reports reveal that Turkey is in talks with Qatar after withdrawing its troops from the Kabul airport just last week. Therefore, the Qatari forces may likely share the responsibility of the Kabul airport security.

On Sunday night, a plane packed with the US and NATO troops landed on Pakistan’s Islamabad airport. Its photographs have been released as well. Furthermore, NATO soldiers were in Islamabad for one night. The NATO plane is said to have taken off for a European nation on Monday. The Pakistan government has not provided an explanation for photographs that appeared in the media.

Osama bin Laden’s ex-security chief arrives in Afghanistan

Osama bin Laden’s security chief Amin-ul-Haq has returned to Afghanistan. His videos and photographs are making rounds in the media. Only a few days ago, Biden had claimed Al Qaeda had been expelled from Afghanistan. However, Amin-ul-Haq’s return confirms that Al Qaeda is still in power and that it is cooperating with the Taliban.

Amin-ul-Haq has returned to his house at Nangahar province near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. For a while, Osama bin Laden had gone into hiding at the Tora-Bora hills after the US attacks. Amin was with Osama at the time, and he is recognised as a senior member of Al Qaeda.

‘Finishing Al Qaeda was one of the prime objectives of the United States for carrying out attacks in Afghanistan. It was no longer necessary to keep the military deployed in Afghanistan as it had been met,’ the US President claimed. Besides, President Biden also asserted that the Taliban had severed its ties with Al Qaeda. Be that as it may, Amin-ul-Haq’s presence in Afghanistan has proven both his claims wrong and may thus have far-reaching political repercussions.
