After Donbas, Russia intensifies attacks on North and West Ukraine

Moscow/Kyiv: – After gaining control over most of Severodonetsk in the Donbas region, the Russian forces have once again intensified their attacks in North, West and South Ukraine. In the last 24 hours, Russia has launched missile attacks in Kharkiv, Sumi, Lviv, and Mykolaiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that Russia controls 20% of Ukrainian territory.

Donbas

Moreover, Russia turned its attention to the Donbas region after gaining complete control over the city of Mariupol last month. Russia has launched attacks on Donbas, with the Russian troops freed from the Mariupol campaign, military units based in Crimea, and troops deployed on the Russian border. Russian President Vladimir Putin had made a special mention of the Donbas region while initiating military action in Ukraine. Therefore, the Donbas campaign is believed to be the most important for the Russian forces.

Donbas

The Russian military had started an all-out offensive against Donbas, setting aside withdrawals from other parts of the country, including the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. Its success is evident from the achievements of the Russian military over the past two weeks. Every two to three days, Russian forces are reported to be occupying key parts of Donbas and small towns. 70% of Luhansk province, a part of Donbas, is under Russian control. It is said that after the annexation of Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, the province will be entirely under Russian control. Following the capture of Luhansk, there are indications that Russia will also take control of the Donetsk province in the next few days.

Donbas

The confidence of the Russian troops appears to have multiplied given the success in the Donbas region, and aggressive attacks on other parts of Ukraine have resumed. Local officials said that many missiles and rockets were fired at Mykolaiv in South Ukraine on Wednesday. Mykolaiv is considered a milestone in the conquest of Odesa, a port and important base in southern Ukraine. Along with Mykolaiv, missiles were also fired at the Ukrainian cities of Lviv in the west, Kharkiv in the north, and Sumi. Ukrainian officials informed that Russia fired missiles at the Beskyd Tunnel, near the Slovakian border. Ukrainian officials said that more than ten people had been killed and more than 30 injured in the attacks.

Russia’s success in Donbas has become a matter of increasing concern among pro-Ukraine Western nations and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that Ukrainian troops suffer heavy losses in Donbas. ‘Ukraine is losing 60 to 100 soldiers every day in Russian military attacks and about 500 people are injured. Zelensky also acknowledged that Russia controls more than 20% of Ukraine.
