Ukraine’s attacks on Zaporizhzhia plant are acts of ‘nuclear terrorism’

Moscow/Kyiv – Ukraine has launched as many as 29 attacks on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the last six weeks. It is nuclear terrorism, and the US and the European Union have been provoking it, accused Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu. At the same time, Russia’s Defence Ministry has accused Ukraine of planning to take control of the nuclear project by using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) squad as human shields. On Thursday, the commission’s squad had entered to inspect the nuclear project. After the initial inspection, some of the inspectors who are part of the squad will be permanently deployed to the project, Russian media reported.

Russia responded that the visit of this squad was a positive event and expressed confidence that all misunderstandings about the project would be resolved. While the team was in the process of inspection, it came to light that the accusation-counter-accusation session had begun between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine cited Russia’s military deployment and adamantly demanded the agency recommend immediate demilitarization of the project.

In the last month and a half, Ukraine has fired 120 artillery shells at the nuclear project and sent 16 suicide drones near the plant, Shoigu said. Russia’s Defence Ministry also accused Ukraine of the attacks following a rebuke by Defence Minister Shoigu. The Russian Defence Ministry said in its accusations that Ukraine’s military plans to attack the project. According to this plan, inspectors from the commission will be held hostage as human shields. It further said that Ukraine intends to take control of the nuclear project through the squad sent by the agency. Russia also claimed that after the Atomic Energy Commission squad entered the nuclear plant, they were also shown evidence of attacks by Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the preliminary inspection of the Atomic Energy Agency team is said to have been completed. Rafael Grossi heads the squad along with Atomic Energy Agency and has returned. But some observers who are part of the squad will be permanently deployed to the project, informed the Russian media.
