Moscow/Paris: Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, ‘In 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After these attacks, Japan surrendered, and World War II ended. This incident shows that there is no need to attack major cities to win a war.’ Putin has once again caused a stir by making this statement about nuclear attacks during his conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. Media claims that this statement of the Russian President indicates that he will use ‘tactical nuclear weapons’ in Ukraine. French sources informed that President Macron had taken serious cognisance of this statement.
After the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, President Putin and other Russian leaders have consistently made statements regarding nuclear attacks. Within a few days after the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin had instructed his nuclear forces to be on alert. A few weeks ago, citing Russia’s nuclear might, Putin warned that the statements he is making in this regard should not be taken as hollow threats. Besides, the western media reported that some officials made statements about a nuclear attack on Ukraine at a meeting of defence officials in Russia last week.
The United States also accelerated the deployment of advanced nuclear weapons in European countries. At the meeting of the NATO defence ministers held in Europe, the United States had indicated the deployment of new nuclear bombs. There was a strong reaction from Russia to these moves. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko warned that ‘Russia will also be forced to change its policies in the face of US deployments’.
In the wake of these events, President Putin’s statement citing the nuclear attack of the Second World War becomes significant. The United States dropped two atomic bombs on Japan on the 6th and 9th of August 1945. Nearly two hundred thousand Japanese citizens were killed in this terrible nuclear attack. Japan surrendered following these attacks. Moreover, French sources said President Macron believed that Putin’s statement, which cited all this, sounded warning bells.
