Moscow/Kyiv: Criticizing the peace proposal of the Ukrainian president, calling it an eyewash, Russia has launched massive missile attacks on Ukraine. In the 24 hours between Wednesday and Thursday, Russia’s armed forces showered as many as 120 missiles and drones on Ukraine. It targeted major cities in Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv. Ukraine said this was Russia’s biggest missile attack since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the end of February. Meanwhile, the head of Ukraine’s intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, claimed that both sides had reached a stalemate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Since Wednesday night, Russian armed forces have launched attacks on Ukrainian cities. Initially, Iran’s Shahed drones were used. After that, missile attacks were launched on Ukrainian towns. Along with the capital Kyiv, the cities of Kharkiv, Kherson, Kyiv Rih, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Sumy, Mykolaiv were hit the most. Air raid sirens sounded in all the Ukrainian regions, local media reported. Ukrainian officials said Russian warships and fighter jets in the Black Sea carried out the missile strikes.
Ukraine’s Defence Ministry claimed it was the biggest missile attack since the war began in February. The attacks are also said to have caused blackouts in most of Ukraine’s leading cities. Forty per cent of the power supply in the capital Kyiv has been cut off, and 90 per cent of homes in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv have blacked out. Since October, Russia has launched widespread missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian towns. In December alone, Russia launched seven major missile and drone attacks on Ukraine.
Russia’s attacks have repeatedly disproved the claims made by Ukraine and the Western alliance. Ukraine, the United States, and European countries had made big claims that Russia’s military power was on the decline. Western media and analysts had said the missile attacks in October were Russia’s last attempt and Russia’s stockpiles were running out. However, Russia has used at least 40 to more than 100 missiles and drones in major attacks every time. Therefore, the claims that the Russian missile and drone stocks were running out have been proven false.
Russia also sharpened the edge of its attacks against Ukraine this month. Donbas and Kherson are continuously being attacked, and Russia has succeeded in stopping the advances of the Ukrainian army. The Ukrainian regime also admits to being in a deadlock given the Russian onslaught. The statement made by the head of intelligence of Ukraine in this regard confirms this. He has admitted that Ukraine’s forces, as also the Russian forces, have failed to advance. The intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said the armies of both countries have reached a stalemate and are in the same positions.
Meanwhile, Russia has rejected the ten-point peace proposal presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Ukraine’s claim to Russian-held territories was an illusion and rejected the peace proposal. At the same time, the Russian armed forces are devising a new plan to cut off the supply of foreign weapons to Ukraine and warned that the attacks would increase in the future.
