On Sunday night, Ukraine launched a massive rocket attack on the Russian-controlled city of Makiivka in the Donetsk region. The Ukrainian Army fired six HIMARS rockets at a military building in the city. The entire building was destroyed in this attack. A batch of newly recruited soldiers of the Russian Army was stationed in this building. At the same time, a large stock of explosives was on the ground floor. Ukrainian officials claimed that as many as 400 Russian soldiers were killed in the attack. In response, strong reactions emerged from Russian circles.

Initially, the Russian Defence Ministry had reported 63 Russian soldiers to have been killed. However, the ministry issued a statement with a new update in just 24 hours. It said nearly 90 soldiers had died, and more information would be provided later. After the heavy loss of life in Makiivka, Russian President Putin held a meeting with the Defense Ministry and took an aggressive stance on the treatment meted out to Russian soldiers and related issues. After this meeting with Putin, Russian forces are said to have launched major attacks in the Donetsk region.

These attacks targeted the HIMARS systems responsible for the deaths in Makiivka. The Defense Ministry informed that four HIMARS launchers and 800 rocket projectiles were destroyed. Russia said almost two hundred Ukrainian soldiers were killed in these attacks in the Druzhkovka area. At the same time, action was taken against a detachment of foreign soldiers in the Maslovka area. The Russian Defense Ministry informed that more than 130 foreign soldiers were killed. Missile and rocket attacks have also been reported in the Kramatorsk area of the Donetsk region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has also claimed a major attack in Kherson following Makiivka. According to the Ukrainian authorities and media, 500 Russian soldiers may have been killed. In the wake of this attack, Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s military intelligence head, warned that there would be future attacks deep into Russian territory. Budanov cautioned that it would also include the Crimea region. He also said that the US had given a lot of help to Ukraine for the previous attacks.
