Moscow/Kyiv: Russia stepped up its attacks on Ukraine at the beginning of the new year. After two consecutive days of drone attacks, Russia has intensified its attacks in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia along with the Donbas region. Artillery guns, tanks, rockets and mortars were said to have been used in these attacks. In the wake of these attacks, senior Ukrainian officials have demanded new tanks from the United States and other Western countries. Also, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned they could not risk underestimating Russia and President Vladimir Putin.
On Sunday night, Ukraine launched a massive rocket attack on the Russian-controlled city of Makiivka in the Donetsk region. Many Russian soldiers were killed in the attack. In response, the Russian military launched heavy attacks on Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk region, killing around 350 people. After the attack on Ukraine, Russian forces have become more aggressive and have launched major attacks on three fronts in the Donbas region. Ukraine has reported that Russia has carried out heavy strikes in the last 24 hours in Lyman, Bakhmut and Avdiivka.
The Russian Army has deployed new military units and weapons in this area, and vigorous attacks are being launched with them. Tanks, artillery guns, mortars, multiple-launch rocket systems and missiles have also been used. Russia fired 14 rockets, including three missiles, at the Kostiantynivka area of the Donetsk region. Russia is also said to have been preparing to augment the military front in the Kupiansk area. On Thursday, Ukrainian agencies reported that Russian forces carried out heavy strikes in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Ukrainian forces now appear to have become wary due to Russia initiating intensive attacks on eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have demanded new tanks and artillery from the West to counter Russian offensives in east Ukraine. Officials of Ukraine informed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky raised this issue in his discussion with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. At the same time, Ukrainian agencies have reported that talks have been held with Germany and the United States in this regard. The US has agreed to provide Ukraine with Bradley Fighting Vehicles (BFV), while France agreed to provide light tanks.
Meanwhile, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned that the Russian military and Russian President Putin could not be underestimated. Stoltenberg warned at a conference in Norway, pointing out that there was no indication that Putin had changed his plans.
