Africa is becoming a hot spot for global terrorism

United Nations: The number of terrorist attacks since last year and the increasing number of organisations involved is a matter of concern. Besides, the African continent is becoming a hot spot of global terrorism, warned United Nations Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari. Major terrorist organisations such as Al Qaeda and ISIS, as well as local terrorist groups, are threatening the security of the entire African continent, Khiari said.

The conference, which began under the chairmanship of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, expressed concern over the growing terrorism in Africa. Due to political, economic and social rifts and border disputes in African countries, the influence of Al Qaeda and ISIS is increasing. The gangs and organisations associated with these terrorist organisations are becoming a headache for the security of African countries.

In 2022, African nations suffered 50% of the total loss of life and collateral damage in terrorist attacks around the world, Khiari said. In this, the United Nations drew attention to the activities of terrorist organisations from Burkina Faso and Sahel region countries. In such a situation, information has emerged that arms smuggling is taking place in Chad, Sudan and Libya, taking advantage of the instability spreading in these regions.

Furthermore, successful operations were ongoing against the terrorist organisation Al Shabaab in Somalia. However, African analysts are drawing attention to the increased number of al-Shabaab attacks in Somalia after the local government transferred the army officer leading the operations. At the same time, the instability of Mali, Niger and Congo is also being claimed to prove helpful to terrorist organisations.

Meanwhile, Gregory Hinds, head of Interpol’s Counter-Terrorism, has provided alarming information about a 50-fold increase in extremist attacks in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia-Pacific over the past decade. Hinds also reminded them that the new Nazi and racist groups were proving to be a challenge to the local machinery.
