Washington / Kyiv – The United States and Ukraine have claimed that Russian troops are preparing for a major invasion in the eastern Ukrainian province of Donetsk. John Kirby, a spokesman for the US Department of Defense, informed that it has come to the fore that hundreds of Russian military vehicles have headed for the city of Izium in Donetsk province. Besides, the Ukrainian Defence Department has said that a major conflict will soon begin in eastern Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Azov Battalion of the Ukraine military accused Russia of launching a chemical attack in Mariupol.

Last week, the information had emerged that the Russian forces have retreated from parts of Ukraine, including Kyiv. Following this information, reports of Russia reorganising the campaign in Ukraine were released. Incidents confirming this have surfaced in the last few days. Claims from Ukraine and the US Department of Defense are part of that.

The vehicles carrying the contingent of troops to Donetsk from Russia also included trucks carrying tanks and artillery and armed vehicles, said the US Department of Defense spokesman. John Kirby, a spokesman for the US Department of Defense, has said that it cannot be estimated how big the Russian contingent is. However, Russia is focusing on Donetsk. The new moves indicate Russia is reorganising its military campaign. Ukraine’s Defence Ministry has also confirmed this.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has given a new warning over the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Zelenskyy warned that if Ukrainian forces failed to stop Russia east of Ukraine, Russian forces could again launch attacks in and around the regions of Kyiv. Ukrainian officials fear that decisive attacks could be launched even to seize Mariupol and eastern Ukraine.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in the conflict in Mariupol so far, informed local Ukrainian officials. Ukraine’s Azov Battalion stationed in the city has claimed that there has been a chemical attack in Mariupol. However, Russia has denied the claim.

Meanwhile, NATO member states have begun military exercises in Estonia, which borders Russia. Named the ‘Bold Dragon’, the exercise involves more than 2,000 troops from the UK, France, the Netherlands, and Estonia.
