Tel Aviv: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that ‘If we are to choose between friendship with the United States and preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, Israel will accept the option of stopping Iran. Consequently, it does not matter if it causes friction with the United States.’ Israeli Prime Minister has issued the warning at a time when the Biden administration is in the effort to negotiate a nuclear deal with Iran.
Last week, David Barnea was appointed as the head of Mossad, Israel’s central intelligence agency. Barney took over from former Mossad chief Yossi Cohen on Tuesday. While speaking at the event, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons was Israel’s top priority.
‘There are many threats to Israel’s security today. From hundreds of rocket attacks to Iran’s ongoing efforts to become nuclear-armed are all threats posed to Israel’s security. If Iran becomes nuclear-armed, it poses an existential threat to Israel. Therefore, Israel must fight tirelessly to not let Iran become nuclear-armed under any circumstances,’ Netanyahu said.
‘I hope Israel does not need to make tough decisions to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. But if the choice is between risking friction with the United States and eliminating the Iranian threat, Israel will have to choose to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. It is alright if Israel resultantly has a dispute with the United States over the matter. However, it’s more important for Israel to neutralise Iran and is prepared to risk friction with the United States,’ Netanyahu asserted.
In a telephonic conversation with US President Joe Biden a few days ago, Netanyahu said he had emphasised Israel’s position on Iran. With or without the support of the United States, Israel will not stop short of preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, Netanyahu recalled.
Meanwhile, news reports had earlier revealed that the ongoing negotiations in Vienna had reached a decisive stage. The Biden administration is claimed to be preparing to ease sanctions on Iran. Also, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz will be travelling to the United States in the coming days to discuss the conflict with Hamas and Iran’s nuclear program. The Israeli prime minister thus appears to have issued a new warning to the Biden administration in the wake of the events.
