Iran holds last chance for a nuclear deal

UK and Germany warn at G7 summit

Iran holds last chance for a nuclear deal

Liverpool – The United Kingdom and Germany slammed Iran for being insistent on its nuclear deal demands. ‘This is the last chance for Iran to come to the negotiating table with a serious resolution to this issue, which has to be agreeing the terms of the JCPOA. Time is running out,’ warned the British and German Ministers of Foreign Affairs at the G7 summit. A few hours ago, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi announced that a nuclear deal was possible only if the United States lifted sanctions. The United Kingdom and Germany have responded to this.

The two-week-long talks in Vienna over a nuclear deal with Iran; have come to an end. But European countries are angry at Iran for not being willing to compromise. In the past two weeks, Iran has laid a condition of agreeing to its demands before joining the nuclear deal with the US and European countries. However, more details were not revealed about it. Furthermore, Iranian President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has demanded that the US release Iran from sanctions. Even while speaking to the Chinese newspaper on Saturday, President Raisi suggested that the US should consider Iran’s demands.

Repercussions of the Iranian demands were felt in the G7 meeting held in Liverpool, UK, on Sunday. The foreign ministers of the United Kingdom and Germany openly slammed Iran. Only demands within the nuclear deal framework could be considered, said British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. ‘This is their last chance and it is vital that they do so. We will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon,’ announced Foreign Minister Truss.

Newly-appointed German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also warned Iran at the G7 summit. ‘It has shown in the last days that we do not have any progress… due to the offer of the Iranian government negotiations have been thrown back six months. Time is running out,’ castigated Baerbock.

A few days ago, France also slammed Iran over Vienna negotiations. On top of that, Iran had reprimanded France. But after the G7 summit on Sunday, it became clear that the United Kingdom, France and Germany, members of Europe’s EU three or Europe trio, had taken a hard line against Iran. Iran’s state-run news agency has sharply criticized all three European countries for doing so.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was also present at the G7 summit. But he did not react as specifically to the Iran issue as European countries did. The Biden administration is still adamant about negotiations with Iran, and European countries, including Israel, appear to lose patience with Iran. Israel has ordered its military to be ready for an attack on Iran.
