Tbilisi/ Washington: The Georgian intelligence agency has made a sensational allegation that agencies linked to the US administration are trying to spark a ‘colour revolution’ in Georgia. The Government of Georgia has alleged that the US State Department’s ‘US Aid’ is providing financial assistance to groups engaged in activities to overthrow the government of Georgia. There has been a sharp reaction from the United States over it. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller has stated that the activities started in Georgia are based only on objectives related to human rights and democracy.
Moreover, the events that occurred after the year 2000 in the countries once part of the Soviet Union are known as the Colour Revolution. In 2003, Georgia (Rose Revolution), 2004 Ukraine (Orange Revolution), 2006 Kyrgyzstan (Tulip Revolution), and 2018 Armenia (Velvet Revolution), such revolutions occurred in these countries; coups were carried out through demonstrations. The US State Department, its affiliated organisations, and the US intelligence agency CIA are accused of being behind all these demonstrations. Against this background, the allegations made by the Georgian authorities are attracting much attention.
Furthermore, some Serbian citizens entered the country last month for a ceremony organised by CANVAS, active in Georgia. These people are from Serbia and part of a larger group from Europe, and their hand was seen in some of the earlier revolutions, too. The intelligence agency has also accused the people involved in the program organised in Georgia of guiding them for anti-government action.
Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Alexander Darakhvelidze, accused the event organised in the capital, Tbilisi, of being a serious attempt to incite the opposition to the government. Earlier in 2003, a coup was carried out by organising the colour revolution against the government of Georgia. A few months ago, the government of Serbia, a pro-Russian country in Europe, also targeted Western countries on the issue of colour revolution.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been consistently criticising the United States and other Western countries over the issue of the colour revolution. Putin had claimed similar efforts were being made in Russia as well. Georgia, which Russia invaded in 2008, is Russia’s neighbour. After this, the provinces of ‘South Ossetia’ and ‘Abkhazia’ became independent from Georgia and were supported by Russia.
